In the world of interior design, everything feels a bit like Florida lately. The tropical trend – which seeks to mirror the luscious green seascapes and palm trees like ours – is going stronger than ever, with no signs of slowing down. If you’re hoping to catch this trend before it’s out to sea, there are some tasteful décor items, nice colors and perfect accent pieces to bring it to life.
Nothing says the tropics like green things. Put some tropical plants in pots and containers to be displayed in the areas of your home where a pop of freshness is warranted. Tropical plants come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, so experiment to create the look of life without overcrowding. A tabletop fern, a few hanging plants and a tropical floral centerpiece can make a big difference in how authentic your décor scheme comes across to guests. Remember, tropical plants may need special care to look their best and live the longest. Research those that are easiest to care for and work your way up to more “advanced” species as your green thumb grows. If you aren’t sure about adding live plants to your room, you can also choose a fern-inspired area rug or sectional with greenery accents.
The ocean is a dazzling mosaic of tints and texture, and these themes translate well for indoor spaces. Choose a color scheme that incorporates the blues, greys and greens of water, and don’t be afraid to add a little sparkle and shimmer where appropriate. Even if you gravitate toward a more neutral palette, there are opportunities to bring the essence of water into the room design. Details, such as glass tiles, furniture trim and plushy throw pillow can all reflect the thing that makes ocean living so amazing – the ocean itself!
The clean lines and interesting textures found in many tropical design elements are now available for every room of your home. Look for pieces that incorporate sturdy bamboo frames, such as dining room chairs and end tables. Keep your tropical wood looks balanced by choosing white, cream or other neutral fabrics, as these will help lighten the room. Rattan is also a popular feature of today’s tropical homes, so don’t hesitate to pick large pieces that combine traditional wood builds with bamboo and rattan details in one luxurious look. (Need a shortcut? Bedroom pieces are an easy way to elevate your room to match this trend.)
Tropical decor is known for celebrating luxury, but it’s also adored for being fun! Embrace the spontaneity and festivity of a tropical theme by giving guests plenty of places to gather, share and relax. Patio-style furniture is not limited to the outdoors, and the right buffet or end table can keep guests feeling like they are on a non-stop vacation. While patio furniture is designed to withstand the elements of even the rainiest tropical season, today’s sets are well-built and ready to provide lounging areas for your yard, porch and sitting room, too. Your best tropical-themed décor and tablescapes should be able to handle being carried from room to room, making it easy to replicate the beauty of your home wherever you gather – even if it’s outdoors!
Give existing pieces an upgrade
Finally, it’s not always possible – or desirable – to replace all of your furniture with something new. While shopping for a complete dining room or bedroom set may be the easiest way to turn your home from tedious to tropical, there are other ways to get the job done. Reupholstery, for example, is a beautiful way to get just the look you want with a completely customizable process for putting new fabric on your existing sofa, loveseat or sectional. You may also choose to buy new but create your very own look with the upholstery of your choice. Many new tropical pieces have the option to pick the exact fabric to match your home – and your dreams. Everything from cushions to throw pillows are available to be created to your exact style specifications.
